However, the solution still allows you to bypass the system by forcing an assignment.
Go to the Members module.
Select the profile of the member to be assigned.
Click on the Edit assignments tab.
Check the shifts you wish to assign to the member. You have the option to check the grayed-out boxes, even with the overlap of the two shifts.
